Rangers overcome ninth inning collapse to beat Phillies in extras

The Rangers were only one out away from claiming a 3-0 victory against the Phillies on a dominant day from their bullpen.

The combination of Jacob Latz, Cole Winn, Jalen Beeks, Jakob Junis had eight shutout innings allowing just one hit with two walks and eight strikeouts.

It seemed like Robert Garcia would follow the same pattern as he quickly collected the first two outs and appeared to get the third out when he got Alec Bohm to pop up to Jake Burger in foul territory.

The wind had other ideas.

The swirling 18 mph winds gave Burger issues and he dropped the ball – his second of the day. That gave the Phillies the spark they needed.

Bohm singled followed by an Edmundo Sosa walk ended Garcia’s outing. Chris Martin came to try to clean up the mess. He didn’t do any better.

Former Ranger Adolis Garcia doubled to make it a 3-1 game followed by an RBI single from Brandon Marsh to tie it up at three. Martin would get out of the inning by striking out catcher JT Realmuto.

However, the Rangers did not let this deter them as they scored a pair of runs in the tenth inning off Johan Duran. A wild pitch brought in Brandon Nimmo after he moved over to third on a single from Wyatt Langford, then Langford would come home on an Andrew McCutchen single.

Tyler Alexander came in the tenth and locked it down for the Rangers. He allowed one run on a Bryce Harper single, but would get Bohm to pop up to Seager to end the game.

The game was a lot more stressful than it should have been, but the Rangers showed the same fight that they showed in the opener finishing it off that tested them more than it should have.

McCutchen came into the game in the sixth inning for Joc Pederson, delivered with a big moment and knows how he fits in with the team. “I understand the way that my role is going to be. In and out, come into games late like today. I’m just trying to make sure that I am prepared.”

On the offensive end, Burger led them again going 2 for 5 with two RBI and hitting his second home run in a row. Seager and Nimmo both had two hits as well with Seager launching his first home run of the year.

The rubber match tomorrow will be between new acquired Ranger MacKenzie Gore and Jesus Luzardo for the Phillies. The game will be at 12:35 central time.
