The Offense will move with Seager
This a series that Corey Seager will want to forget as he went 2 for 12, his batting average at just .166. He struck out three times with no walks and left five players on base with two in scoring position.
Seager is 9 for his last 63 since returning from injury. He seems like he could be pressing too much and trying to make something happen. I do believe that Seager will get out of this slump as his advanced numbers say that he should be doing much better. His expected batting average is .285 while his batting average is currently .239. He is due for some positive regression.
The team needs to improve with runners in scoring position
The Rangers went 6 for 25 with running in scoring position. That is not going to win you many games. This is an issue the Rangers have struggled with all year. People had hoped that they would have gotten out of this slump by this point, but this trend always seems to come back.
Something else that I want to point out is that they went 5 for 13 with runners in scoring position during the second game of the series. So that means that they only had one hit with a runner in scoring position in the other two games. The hit was a RBI single by Alejandro Osuna which brought in Corey Seager.
The Rangers need to be better in situational hitting as it seems that they shrink instead of rising to the occasion.
A pair of unexpected arms giving the Rangers some hope
In some positive news, a pair of relievers who most people didn’t think much about before the season started have continued to impress.
Jacob Latz is the first pitcher that I’m going to highlight. He really made a statement today as he pitched the majority of the bullpen game. He went 5.2 innings while allowing one run on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts. He saved the bullpen for the Rangers and he has been amazing for them this year as he sports 3.26 ERA. He has filled in the long reliever role well and has done a great job holding down the bullpen.
The second pitcher is Cole Winn. There were moments in the minor leagues where he really struggled and Rangers fans were ready to move on from him. However, a change to the bullpen has given the former starter new life. Winn added to his scoreless streak as he fired 1 and 1/3 innings.
That brings his total up to 13 innings on the year. It is awesome to see the 2018 first rounder find his place in the organization. The Rangers are hoping that these two can keep this up as they are helping to keep this team and bullpen afloat.
I know this was a rough streak for the Rangers, but I hope pointing out the efforts of these young pitchers show that there is some good and something to be happy about.
Upcoming Schedule
The Rangers will face the Pittsburgh Pirates next. That a series that the Rangers should be able to win, but with baseball who knows. At least they don’t have to faec Paul Skenes as he pitched the second game of a doubleheader today, so things could be worse.
